What is Cloud Computing

Cloud is probably one of the most used, and often abused, terms in the ICT Industry Today.

So let’s demystify the term and the technology:

When you connect to any Internet Service where you process or store data, you are connecting to a Cloud Service. A good example of cloud Computing is Facebook, you can store, access and share your personal information online but you have no idea where the data is stored (not even in which country).

So how can you use Cloud Computing to benefit your business?

Well firstly, you can access Software, normally for a nominal licence fee, without having to invest in the Software Package itself or to have it installed and maintained.

A few examples include:
  • Online Payroll Services.
  • Online Accounting Services (Pastel Accounting have a cloud based service).
  • Microsoft Office 365.

A second practical use of Cloud Computing would be for the Storage of Data offsite (ie. Backups).

A few examples include:
  • Pastel Iron Tree.
  • Acnonis Remote Backup.
But there are many types of Cloud Based Services, here a few more technical examples:

  • Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
  • Platform as a service (PaaS)
  • Software as a service (SaaS)
  • Storage as a service (STaaS)
  • Security as a service (SECaaS)
  • Data as a service (DaaS)
  • Database as a service (DBaaS)
  • Test environment as a service (TEaaS)
  • Desktop virtualization
  • API as a service (APIaaS)
  • Backend as a service (BaaS)
