ADSL for Home

What is ADSL?

ADSL is a permanent Broadband Internet Connection that is provided over a Standard Telkom Telephone Line. A Modem or Router is connected to the Telephone Line to provide the connection. When used in conjunction with a POTS Filter the ADSL connection does not affect the normal operation of the phone line.

Components:

ADSL requires the following components to work:

  1. An Analogue Telephone Line.
  2. An ADSL Service (see DSL Speeds below, preferably managed by Enyuka).
  3. A suitable bandwidth package (provided by Enyuka).

ADSL Speeds

TELKOM Home ADSL is provided in the following Speed Variants:

Telkom Fast ADSL

Internet Download Speeds up to 1,024 Kbps (1 Mbps).

(Upload speeds up to 128 Kbps).

Telkom Faster ADSL:

Internet Download Speeds up to 2048 Kbps (2 Mbps).

(Upload speeds up to 256 Kbps).

Telkom Fastest ADSL:

Internet Download Speeds up to 10,240 Kbps (10 Mbps).

(Upload speeds up to 1 Mbps).

Important notes about ADSL Speeds:

The following factors will affect the ADSL Line Speed Available to your home:
  • The distance from the Telkom Exchange.
  • The quality of Telkom’s Copper Cables.
  • The maximum speed of Telkom’s DSLAM in the exchange (i.e. many Telkom ADSL Fastest Lines have a maximum download speed of 4 Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 512 Kbps)
ADSL is a best effort service. The following factors may affect the speed of your Internet Access:
  • Telkom’s Local network capacity.
  • Congestion on remote networks.
  • Issues with International Links.
  • Traffic Shaping.
  • Contention Ratios.
  • Time of the day if using a Home ADSL Package.

How is a Home ADSL Package different to a Business DSL Package?

A Home ADSL Package is designed specifically for home type applications. Speed is limited during the business day but is much faster outside of office hours. This allows home users to benefit from pricing that is substantially lower than the Business Packages. By virtue of the design of these home packages, they are not suitable for business use.

If you run a home office, or if you require higher speeds during the working day, we suggest that you subscribe to a business package.
